What the title doesn’t mention is the Cirrus module, for me no exploration on the AE modular happens without that as processor/fx. The Cowbell is, of course, John ‘Wonkystuff’ Tuffens CB808 mini module, his RBSS module is randomly controlling the cut off of the Diode Filter just at the point of self oscillation making the whistling sound and when the random RBSS voltage goes over a certain threshold the cowbell is also triggered. All that is piped through the Cirrus module mostly using mode 4: Spectral Cumulus. The CowBell is also patched through the standard delay module with the delay time manipulated by one cv loop from KYAA’s 2AUTO module , the other cv loop is moving the ‘size’ ( spectral shifting ) and the ‘density’ ( FFT bin updating ) and sometimes the ‘shape’ ( partials ). All patched into the MIXCONSOLE to make it stereo. A long winded recording exploring this patch was edited down , in the final 3rd of the sequence there are 3 layers overlayed.
If you think some of the squealing in this is a bit of an earbend... well, spare a thought for the many cows in the world forced to wear sometimes ridiculously sized cowbells. Studies show a cow’s hearing is much more sensitive than humans and the non stop clanging of the bells as they move could seem the equivalent of 100db to them ( “We Are Happy Cows” NOT! ).
BUT!.... What would the Alps be without such iconic & traditional sounds you say? How about the cows wear a collar with a tracking chip for the farmers to find them instead and commission breeze ( and solar? ) activated sound sculptures made from the cowbells? That would keep the traditional tinkling of the hills alive but cows can keep a distance from if they have a headache?

It's hard to pick a track but the opening bits of Sunsmack let you know what you're in for and the rest of the EP doesn't let up at all. Fantastic all the way through. J Brandt
