This track was a fun challenge for me to try and use several different modules in a different way. There were 3 patches worth of sounds recorded for this track, and all of them relied upon Kyaa’s Euclid Grid pretty heavily. Instead of detailing patches, I’ll just explain the sounds.
Percussion - I relied very heavily on my DRONE38 and DRONX for the hats, snare, and bass drum. Because this module combo can be tuned to have so many overtones (as well as has its own simple EQ and effects), all that you’d need to do to get great-sounding percussion is add it to a 2VCA and shape the sound with a sequencer triggering the 2ENV… it’s different than using it as a drone, but I’ve had great success with shaping my own percussion.
Bass - this was made with the 2OSC/d (both low square oscillators), and it was put through the SVFILTER with the same 2ENV that shapes the sound’s articulation being put to the CV1 input of the filter. Great results.
Synth lead - this was done with the Euclid grid triggering the SEQ16. The sequencer outputted CV to the CV inputs of the 2OSC/d, which both were used for the lead. They were slightly detuned from each other for that fatter sound.
“Weather” - the sweeps and drops were produced by putting the NOISE through the SVFILTER, and the 2LFO controlling the CV input of the NOISE and the other being put through 2ATT/CV so that the amplitude of the LFO could be controlled in real time as it controls the filter sweeps. It was fun to improvise these.
Sine waves sequence - the sine wave sequence is produced by the MS 20 FILTER. The pitches of the sequence were being outputted from the SEQ16 and inputted into the CV1 of the filter. The filter’s CV1 was up all the way and resonance was just passed halfway. I used the frequency knob to transpose the sequence to a comfortable place that worked in the song.
Mixing - I used Logic Pro X along with a Steinberg UR22 interface to record and mix. I used delays, reverbs, compressors, and other mixing tools. But all the sounds are from the AE. I relied on ducking (sidechaining) quite a bit, but it had nice results.
It's hard to pick a track but the opening bits of Sunsmack let you know what you're in for and the rest of the EP doesn't let up at all. Fantastic all the way through. J Brandt
