Tombo - Blombo Bass (feat. Tombowlina)

The track was started by creating a patch for inspiration. I then recorded it (multi tracked) and loaded it into my DAW. From there, I bounced back and forth between my modular and PC a number of times until I had enough sonic content to fill out a song. All mixing and mastering was done digitally, but effects were about half and half (prioritizing analog effects like filters and such on the modular).

There are a number of chords in the song, for those I composed chords I liked on the PC, and then created a tambre I liked on the modular. I then multi tracked each note of the chord and combined them digitally.

As for the vocals and drum samples, I'm lucky to have gotten my hands on an early SAMPLYR unit, which I used to flip the samples after recording things like the vocals on my PC.

Here are some random patch notes off the top of my head:

Noise Riser: NOISE going through an amp envelope and TONE.

'Donk' Bass: FMOS with a separate (short) amp and mod depth envelope.

All Subs: FMOS (in SIN mode) run through SLEW and any lowpass. It gives a really nice and clean sub bass if tuned right.

'Bright' Chords: Detuned saw waves going through a filter with an cutoff envalope tuned for 'brassiness'. Mutli tracked.

'Mellow' Chords: Similar, but used WAVETABLES as the sound source. Added a delayed tremolo effect for some added depth. Also multi tracked.

Jungle Drums: Found a d'n'b sample, which I flipped and did some chopping on the modular. Additional arrangement was done in the DAW though for different sections.

Ride Cymbal: DRUMKIT010's open hat, doubled in post.

All Vocals: Recorded on PC sent to SAMPLYR, briefly arranged and recorded back into the DAW. Fun fact: The lady vocal is my voice formant shifted. 🙃
