Matt Wand - Accidentally Acousmatic

about

Audibly, this probably sounds like the result of the intricate tape splicing dexterity of a Pierre Schaeffer acolyte or some other more brutally inclined electro-acoustician. But NO. It is simply the sounds coming directly from an AE Vcase-7 primed & loaded with an original CIRRUS module , a RAINS module, Modulators & a BITCRSH u-Module. I am consistently amazed at what can be conjured from crosswiring the Clouds clone & it’s precipitous Rains/Rings companion. Sounds akin to: Improvising on a prepared piano, Bells (obviously), the onomatopoeic tinkling of raindrops on a corrugated iron roof, bursts of engine boiler steam, hungry robot cats, coins ricocheting around a bowl gong, the worst excesses of 1980s DX7 abusers, wind chimes, giant hanger metal doors slamming shut, cheap casio keyboard battery failures, FLUTES even!

The only twist in this version of my ongoing sandwich box AE obsession is that cross patching is all done via a magnet matrix. a cheap but nifty method of emulating the patch pin bay David Cockerell of EMS brought to the VcS3 & Synthi A. This track might actually be a ‘proof of concept’ for a further Hot Air/Wonkystuff device collaboration a là the BioT touch plates ... but enough said on that for now. The combination of the two prime modules stereo possibilities and the stereo nature of the V7 mini case output combined with said matrix mean that the mere lifting of , or placing down of a magnetic ‘pawn’ changes the whole game and balance of this patch ,, it is also responsible for the contact ‘mikrophonies-like’ scratching and scraping elements that could be confused with peak distortions or bad recording connections ,, well in effect they ARE the latter! The reverb is in the Cirrus, no fancy post production tricks other than whittling down a 28 minute mess around to a perfect 8 minutes ( and then to 5 mins on Carsten’s insistence ) and some compression to bring the dynamics of the quieter bits up. Accidentally acousmatic... because it was and even i might possibly be fooled into thinking it was a 1970’s product of the Utrecht Institute of Sonology or an off-cut by a Darmstadt member of staff suddenly enthused by punk/noise.

AE/Robert Langer - the gift/guy that keeps on giving.

More by me: hot-air.bandcamp.com & in all the best phantom record shops that are never actually open.
